Cyber security company warns against complacency

Cyber security expert Phortress has issued a warning about complacency following a spate of cyber crime incidents worldwide.

The company issued its warning after a number of high profile incidents have hit the headlines in recent months, including attacks on big business and governments.

The company, which is based in North East England, also pointed to a wealth of research over recent times that has highlighted the problem, including a survey by Censuswide and Crown Records Management who surveyed IT decision makers at companies with more than 200 employees and found that in Newcastle and surrounding areas 93% of businesses had lost important data.

This was the highest figure in the country, higher than the situation in other major cities like Glasgow, with just 53%, and Plymouth, with 56%.

Nearly 30% of respondents also reported that their companies had been hacked, while 43% said they knew someone whose computer had been hacked.

Other surveys have revealed similarly high levels of vulnerability affecting businesses all over the UK.

Phortress says that too many companies are not taking basic precautions to protect against suspicious emails which if opened allow systems to be infected or to guard against attacks on insecure websites.

Hackers target websites in two ways, one of which is to hijack the server to send out spam emails devised either to spread digital viruses or obtain recipients’ personal details.

The other main way is designed to target e-commerce sites by creating selling pages within legitimate websites so that the user thinks they are in touch with a legitimate seller when they are actually connected directly to the hackers.

Phortress is offering companies a free no-obligation diagnostic of websites to discover if they have been compromised.

The diagnostic is applicable for any kind of businesses but Phortress says it will be particularly useful for IT professionals, accountants and solicitors, all of which handle sensitive information on a daily basis.
